New Energy Technologies A new era of opportunity is emerging in the power industry. For the past quarter century, generation and transmission capacity has not kept pace with growth of demand in many parts of North America, and aging infrastructure has not been upgraded. At the same time, increased demand for extremely reliable power to run automated manufacturing and the information economy has caused energy suppliers and users to search for new methods of guaranteeing power quality reliability, including the possibility of generating power on a distributed basis -- close to where it is needed. In some jurisdictions in North America and abroad, governments are taking initial steps to deregulate the power sector, moving from rate-of-return-based pricing to performance-based or even market pricing at wholesale or retail levels. These changes, coupled with increased demand for time of use metering, are creating new opportunities for energy information and conservation systems. Renewable and Alternative Power Increased environmental awareness and concerns related to climate change are encouraging new approaches to renewable and alternative energy. The introduction of Renewable Portfolio Standards in many North American and European jurisdictions, coupled with tax credits for capital equipment or subsidies for power generated, have set the stage for continuing strong growth in the solar, wind and biomass sectors and the possible emergence of completely new forms of alternative power. The result is a new quest by many industry players to find innovative technologies that can produce order-of-magnitude changes in how electricity is generated, transmitted and used. Efficiency, reliability and environmental friendliness are paramount.
Future Winners While competition is significant, companies with the right solutions face potentially large rewards. OPG Ventures is ideally positioned to identify these future winners early, providing them with the resources necessary to grow into world-class companies. |
